A Kalanchoe for Every Child
We are excited about our Kalenchoe initiative here at Milldown. As part of this initiative each child will have the opportunity to care for their plant in the classroom. This initiative is part of our wider 'Let Grow' initiative that seeks to encourage greater independence and foster better resilience.
The benefits of looking after a plant include:
Responsibility and Accountability: Caring for a plant teaches children to be responsible and accountable. They will learn to water their plant regularly, ensure it gets enough sunlight, and monitor its growth.
Environmental Awareness: This activity will help children develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for nature. They will learn about the importance of plants in our ecosystem and how they contribute to a healthy environment.
Science and Learning: Children will have the chance to observe the life cycle of a plant firsthand. This hands-on experience will complement their science curriculum and enhance their understanding of biological processes.
Emotional Well-being: Studies have shown that interacting with plants can reduce stress and improve mood. We believe that having a plant to care for will provide a sense of calm and joy for our children.
Teamwork and Collaboration: While each child will have their plant, they will also work together to create a thriving classroom garden. This will foster a sense of community and teamwork among the children.
Every child in school is given their plant which they will look after during their time at Milldown. At the end of each school year, the plants will move up to the new class with the children, being re-potted when needed. The plants will remain in school over the weekend and shorter half terms (1 week).
However, over the longer holidays, Easter and summer, the plants will be taken home for the children to care for at home, with appropriate support from adults. Below is a guide to help you understand and look after a Kalanchoe plant.
